DESCRIPTION:The third lunchtime talk on AI for Information Governance in Microsoft365 took place on April 5. Please find the recording below \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: While artificial intelligence has been claimed to be ‘just around the corner’ for several decades now\, over the past few years there have been clear indications that the technology is starting to be used in real-world scenarios. \n\n\n\nWithin the Information Governance community AI is certainly being anticipated as somewhat of a panacea. With most organisations having inadequate processes surrounding the way they store and manage information throughout its lifecycle\, AI is starting to be seen as the solution that will clean up the existing mess and sort out everyone’s ‘digital heaps’. \n\n\n\nMicrosoft\, alongside other tech giants has recently been investing heavily in starting the bring the potential of artificial intelligence into their cloud collaboration platform\, Microsoft 365. We’ve already seen several information management applications being introduced into the platform\, which leverage the AI provided by Microsoft’s Cognitive Services. \n\n\n\nIn this session\, Rob Bath outlines the functionality provided by some of the existing AI-driven governance tools that can be found within Microsoft 365. These include: \n\n\n\n• Trainable Classifiers – uses AI to automatically classify content in your tenant that matches the positive examples that you’ve provided. \n\n\n\n• Viva Topics – a knowledge management extension\, which automatically creates a knowledge network out of your existing content. \n\n\n\n• Microsoft Syntex – a quickly maturity suite of tools\, which use AI to automatically identify\, classify and extract metadata from specific types of content. The various models that Syntex provides will be outlined\, including Structured\, Unstructured & Freeform Document Processing. \n\n\n\nDuring this session\, Rob Bath will outline his views on each of these capabilities as they currently exist\, while also exploring the next steps that he sees on the horizon\, especially the application of AI for auto summarisation of content within Microsoft 365.Speaker: Robert Bath Having overseen some of the UK’s most extensive records management architectures in Microsoft 365\, Rob Bath is a leading solution architect and subject matter expert of the platform’s retention capabilities. DESCRIPTION:The second lunchtime talk with Dr Mhairi Aitken on ‘Establishing a Social Licence for AI: Addressing ethical considerations through trustworthy practice’ organised by the AHRC-funded project Unlocking our Digital Past with Artificial Intelligence (LUSTRE) took place on 8 March 2023.Watch the recording of the lunchtime talk below \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: Current attention directed at ethical dimensions of Artificial Intelligence has led to increasing recognition of the need to establish a “Social Licence” for current and future practices. The notion of a “Social Licence” recognises that there can be meaningful differences between what is legally permissible and what is socially acceptable. Establishing a Social Licence entails public engagement to build relationships of trust and ensure that practices align with public values. Such approaches are needed across all areas and industries of data-intensive innovation to complement regulation and inform ethical practice. This is important to underpin culture change and to move beyond rhetorical commitments to develop best practice putting ethics at the heart of innovation. In my talk I will summarise key ethical considerations relating to the design\, development\, deployment and governance of AI and explore the importance of public engagement to establish trustworthy practices needed to underpin responsible innovation. In particular\, I will explore the opportunities and challenges that may encountered in embedding public engagement within design\, development and deployment of AI systems. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Dr Mhairi Aitken is an Ethics Research Fellow in the Public Policy Programme at The Alan Turing Institute. She is a Sociologist whose research examines social and ethical dimensions of digital innovation particularly relating to uses of data and AI. Mhairi has a particular interest in the role of public engagement in informing ethical data practices. Mhairi’s research draws on her background in Sociology and Science and Technology Studies (STS) to examine social and ethical dimensions of innovation. Her past research has focussed in particular on the role of machine learning in finance; governance of data-intensive health research; ethical considerations around secondary uses of health data and planning and development processes relating to renewable energy projects.

SUMMARY:Lunchtime talk 1 with Giovanni Colavizza: Towards AI-supported records management
DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly necessary in support of records management decisions. The scale\, rapidity and complexity required in modern records management operations all contribute to make AI increasingly relevant to practitioners. This talk will start by reviewing recent contributions at the intersection of records management and AI\, as well as highlight the many challenges still lying ahead of us. Preliminary considerations on the preconditions and requirements of using AI in support of records management will be proposed for discussion. These will be grounded in concrete examples and in an appreciation of the limits and potential of modern-day AI technology. \nPresentation Slides (PDF)\n \nGiovanni Colavizza is Assistant Professor of Digital Humanities at UvA\, visiting researcher at The Alan Turing Institute and at the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS)\, Leiden University. \n\nHe did his PhD at the Digital Humanities Laboratory of the EPFL in Lausanne\, working on methods for text mining and citation analysis of scholarly publications\, and is co-founder of Odoma\, a start-up offering customised machine learning techniques in the cultural heritage domain. Giovanni was also a Co-investigator on the Living with Machines project and convenes the AI for Arts interest group at the Turing. \n\nPrior to joining the UvA\, Giovanni has been part of the Research Engineering Group of The Alan Turing Institute\, and a researcher at Leiden University (CWTS)\, the Leibniz Institute of European History in Mainz\, and the University of Oxford. He studied computer science (BSc) and history (BA\, MA) in Udine\, Milan\, Padua and Venice in Italy.
