Abstract: This presentation explores the Bodleian Libraries’ evolving approach to AI, framed by our mission to enable access to collections for learning and research. We’ll begin with a brief overview of our scale, services, and digital strategy, highlighting what we aim to change and why. We’ll then share how and why we’re exploring AI, and what we hope to learn. Bio: Elizabeth (Lizzie) Hatfield: Lizzie Hatfield is Head of the Office for Strategy and Delivery at the Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford. In this role, she leads strategic planning and coordinates cross-organisational initiatives to help improve the Libraries’ services, collections, and ways of working. Lizzie recently helped to broker a partnership agreement with OpenAI for a digitisation pilot. Her previous experience includes working at the Centre for Data Ethics & Innovation, where she led governance, operations, and strategy. Her background across both the public sector and the Bodleian helps Lizzie to contribute a cross-sector perspective to these important conversations.
Andrew Bonnie: Andrew Bonnie is Chief of Digital Operations at the Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford, where he leads on the development and delivery of digital services to support research, learning, and access to library collections. With a background in IT consultancy and business change, Andrew brings both a strategic and technical perspective when considering the challenges and opportunities of AI and libraries. He is currently leading the transformation of the Bodleian’s digital infrastructure and tools, to enable the curation, discovery, access, use, and long-term preservation of the full breadth of the libraries’ collections.
